What BMI measures
Body Mass Index compares your weight to your height with a simple formula (weight in kg divided by height in metres squared). It's a quick screening tool that works reasonably well across large populations — but it's a starting point, not a diagnosis.
The standard categories
| BMI | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Healthy weight |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 + | Obesity range |
What BMI can't tell you
For the full picture of what your number means and what else to consider, read what does my BMI mean. Pairing BMI with a waist measurement and basic health markers gives far more insight than the number alone.
