Annual summary
Why Nova Scotia takes more than most provinces
Two reasons, and neither is the headline rate. The first is where the brackets start: Nova Scotia’s second rate of 14.95% begins at just $30,995, so a full-time minimum-wage worker is already into it. The second is the basic personal amount. At $11,932 it is among the lowest in the country — Alberta shelters $22,769 before charging anything — so Nova Scotia starts taxing thousands of dollars that a prairie province leaves alone.
Put together, a $60,000 salary keeps $44,726 in Nova Scotia against $47,691 in Alberta on identical federal tax, CPP and EI. That is $2,964 a year, and almost none of it comes from the top rate everyone talks about.
Nova Scotia income tax rates for 2026
| Taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| First $30,995 | 8.79% |
| $30,995 – $61,991 | 14.95% |
| $61,991 – $97,417 | 16.67% |
| $97,417 – $157,124 | 17.50% |
| Over $157,124 | 21.00% |
Five brackets, more than most provinces use, and a top rate of 21% — the highest provincial rate in Canada. Stacked on the 33% federal rate it means a combined marginal rate of 54% on income above $258,482. The basic personal amount is $11,932.
Bracket creep ended in 2025, and it mattered
Until 2025 Nova Scotia was one of the last provinces that did not index its tax brackets to inflation. Every year prices rose, every year wages followed, and every year a slightly larger slice of an unchanged real income crossed into a higher bracket. Nobody voted for that increase; arithmetic delivered it.
From 2025 the brackets and the basic personal amount are indexed, at 1.6% for 2026. Nova Scotia also removed the old income-tested basic personal amount in the same reform — it used to shrink as income rose, which the Canada Revenue Agency has now dropped from its payroll formulas entirely. Every Nova Scotian claims the same $11,932 regardless of income, which is why this calculator applies it flat.

Minimum wage in Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia raised its minimum wage twice in 2026: to $16.75 on 1 April, then to $17.00 on 1 October. The rate is set by the consumer price index plus one per cent, which is why it moves more than once a year.
At 40 hours a week, $17.00 an hour is $35,360 a year gross and roughly $28,706 after deductions, about $2,392 a month. Note where that lands: comfortably above the $30,995 threshold, so a full-time minimum-wage earner in Nova Scotia is paying the 14.95% provincial rate on part of their income.
CPP and EI in Nova Scotia
Both are federal, so Nova Scotians pay exactly what everyone outside Quebec pays. For 2026 CPP is 5.95% on earnings between the $3,500 exemption and the $74,600 ceiling, to a maximum of $4,230.45, with CPP2 taking 4% of earnings between $74,600 and $85,000 to a further $416. EI is 1.63% to a maximum of $1,123.07.
Both stop once the annual maximum is reached. On a Nova Scotia salary near the ceiling that happens in the autumn, and the November and December paycheques are visibly larger than January’s.
Halifax, and the rest of the province
No Canadian municipality charges income tax, so a Halifax salary calculator gives the Nova Scotia answer — the same deductions as Sydney or Truro on the same pay. What Halifax Regional Municipality does charge is property tax, at rates that differ between the urban, suburban and rural service areas, plus a deed transfer tax on a purchase. None of it appears on a pay stub.
