What BMR is

Your Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories your body burns just to keep you alive at complete rest — powering your heart, brain, breathing and cell repair. For most people it's the largest single chunk of daily energy use.

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation

We use the Mifflin-St Jeor formula, which research has found to be among the most accurate for the general population:

BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + s
where s = +5 for males, −161 for females

From BMR to daily calories

BMR alone is too low to eat at, because you actually move during the day. Multiply it by an activity factor to get your TDEE — your real daily burn. The table above shows your BMR scaled across activity levels. For calorie targets toward a goal, use the calorie calculator.

Confused about which number to use? BMR vs TDEE explains it clearly.
